Würzburg is a city of Lower Franconia, in the north of Bavaria in Germany.
Understand
Founded in Xe century, Würzburg has served as the home of powerful prince-bishops for centuries. It is renowned for the Residence, considered one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe and a high representative of Baroque art (and a site of Unesco World Heritage). In Würzburg there is also one of the oldest churches in Germany, built in VIIIe century on the site of an ancient pagan sanctuary. One of its most famous structures, the Festung Marienberg, is a fortress which nowadays surrounds the church.
Würzburg was the center of the kingdom known as Franconia. At XIXe century, Napoleon merged Franconia with Bavaria to which the city belongs today.
Würzburg suffered extensive destruction during a twenty-minute bombardment in 1945 which destroyed around 80% of the city's buildings. Most of the city has been rebuilt, but not with as meticulous fidelity as other historic German cities. Anyone wanting to visit the city to study its historic architecture should expect to see restored buildings side by side with several modern post-war homes. Würzburg has hosted a large US military garrison since reconstruction after WWII. As a result, many of the locals are familiar with American customs. That said, the city lost most of its American presence after the base closed in 2008.
Nowadays, Würzburg is a pretty, historic and lively city that is often overlooked by foreign visitors.

It is considered to be one of the finest examples of Baroque art in the world and has been listed as such as unesco world heritage site. The building was designed by Balthasar Neuman, and the fresco above the staircase was painted by Tiepolo and is said to be the largest in the world. The palace has 300 rooms spread over 3 wings. Photos and videos prohibited inside.- Chapel (right side of the Residence building) free admission. – Decorated by Tiepolo and worth the visit.

- 2 Fortress of Marienberg (Festung Marienberg) (from the old bridge, several routes up the hill; count at least 30 min Steps), 49 931 3551750 access to the walls and the courtyard of the fortress: free. – Perched on a hill at 100 m above the river. From the fortress walls, freely accessible to the public, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the Main. The Castle Museum (for a fee) is a bit confusing for foreign visitors and can be skipped given that it is mostly entirely in German and there is no English speaking guide. Note that most of the very rare collection and the interior were destroyed by fire during the war. Nowadays, the interior and the current collection are a dismal substitute.

Wine fairs
- Würzburger Weindorf ("Wine village") (on the market beach) at the end of May. – The most important.
- Hofgarten Weinfest (in the gardens of the Residence) in July.
- Weinfest am Stein (in a winery in the vineyards) – Crowded, with live music.
- Weinparade (on the market place) end of August.
Almost every wine village in Lower Franconia has its own wine fair, and so you can visit at least one if you visit Wurzburg during the summer or fall months.

Around
Würzburg is the starting point of the famous Romantic Route from Germany. From here you can travel to Rothenburg and the Bavarian Alps.
- 1 Bamberg (less than an hour) – Also part of Unesco World Heritage.
- 2 Veitshöchheim (by boat, the dock in Würzburg is next to Kranenkai Street (lit. the “crane dock”, named after the old machine there); also accessible by train in 05 min) – Embark on a boat trip across the river Main towards this quaint little town which is also has a castle with a rococo garden.
- 3 Wertheim (at about 35) – You can travel on the road to the charming valley of the Tauber from Wertheim via Tauberbischofsheim and Bad Mergentheim up to Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
