To speak

People speak the Yamaguchi dialect, which is very similar to the dialect spoken in Tokyo, but having a somewhat different vocabulary.

In the prefecture, you may see the sign with "oidemase" (お い で ま せ) - which means or "welcome" ("yōkoso" in standard Japanese).

There is an American base at Iwakuni, and therefore some people understand English well. But in other places, especially in rural areas, few people understand English well. Learning basic Japanese phrases will therefore help you a lot.

There is at Shimonoseki lots of Koreans. You will find some signs and guides written in Korean. You might also find Korean speaking people if you try.
