Understand

History

The identity of the first settlers of the region and which was the first settlement in the region is unknown, although the most widespread hypothesis considers that the first town in the municipality is Otlatlán, which is currently located in the town of San Pedro Atmatla, and that it was founded between 697 and 713.

During the conquest, this town voluntarily submitted to Spanish rule, which immediately began the construction of a convent there. In 1560, for unknown reasons, the population was transferred a few kilometers to the north, where the current city of Zacatlán is.

In 1811, during the Mexico's independence, the insurgent Francisco Osorno managed to enter the city of Zacatlán without resistance and subdue the entire region. He turned the city of Zacatlán into his base of operations and the population of San Miguel Tenango into a forge to create cannons and mint coins.

During the second French intervention in Mexico, when the City of Puebla, capital of the state, was besieged, the city of Zacatlán was provisionally declared as the capital of the state.

To get

The municipality lacks connections through railways and airports, so access to it is only by road.

The closest airport terminals that offer the best connection are the Benito Juarez International Airport, in the Mexico City and the Hermanos Serdán International Airport, in the City of Puebla.

By bus

In Mexico City there are two bus terminals that provide transportation service to Zacatlán. The first is the Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente (TAPO) that offers this service through the company ATAH and Supra, which has a cost of $ 160. The second is the Central de Autobuses del Norte, which provides the route through the companies Expresso Futura Buses, Connection Buses and White Star Buses. In both terminals the waiting time between each trip is one hour.

In the city of Puebla, the service is provided at the Central de Autobuses de Pasjeros de la Ciudad de Puebla, which offers the trip through the company ATAH and Supra. Normally the waiting time between each new trip is 20 minutes, but on busy days a second fleet of buses is available, which allows the waiting time between each departure to be only 10 minutes.

Both terminals connect with the Central de Autobuses de Zacatlán, which is located on the outskirts of the city of Zacatlán, and which offers a safe taxi service that charges $ 29 for the trip to the city center. It also has truck routes that cover the same route by $ 6.

By car

From Mexico City, the main route is along the Mexico-Pachuca aupista towards Tulancingo on federal highway 132. After arriving in Tulancingo, take the detour to the El Tejocotal lagoon and a few kilometers from it you will find the detour to the Chignahuapan-Zacatlán highway. The approximate distance of the trip is 209 km and its average duration is two hours.

Respect

One of the few controversial issues in the region is the name that locals should receive. The natural name is zacateco, but because it is identical to the gentilicio with which it refers to the inhabitants of the state of Zacatecas, many tourists prefer to refer to the inhabitants of Zacatlán as zacatlecos, adding a letter L to differentiate them. For the inhabitants of the region this change is not well seen, because although the natural name causes confusion, this new name causes greater confusion, apart from not being aesthetic when listening to it. It is advisable to respect the original name of zacateco, even though some inhabitants have preferred to adopt that of zacatleco.
