Zernez lies in the Engadine on the border between Upper and Lower Engadine. Since the opening of the Swiss national parks In 1914, which is partly in the municipality, Zernez became the starting point for visiting this park.

Zernez was first mentioned in 1161 as Sarnet mentioned. After a village fire in which only 40 of 157 houses remained undamaged, Zernez was rebuilt in a uniform architectural style, which is characterized by flat roof buildings that seem atypical for the Engadin.
