Zoaljo (Italian Zoagli (elp. dzoAlji), Ligurian Zoaggi (elp. zuAĝi), is a municipality of Italy. It is located in the region Liguria and is part of the Metropolitan City of Genoa. The Christian patron saint of the community is Saint Martin of Tours, whose religious commemoration is therefore the community holiday.

Zoaljo is a small town in between Rapallo and Weather in Chiavari in the gulf of Tigulio, about 38 miles east of Genoa.

Known seaside resort town, it is famous for its beautiful characteristic narrow promenade realized in the cliffs apically on the sea, built in the thirties of the twentieth century with the economic contribution of the inhabitants; in the area of ​​Zoagli there are also several natural forested roads, the characteristic Ligurian crêuze (formerly multi-roads), which allow from the city center to reach the hamlets and factions that make up the community.

One of the roads, tracing the ancient Roman street, is called "to the five bell towers" because it connects the ancient faction churches Church of San Pietro de Rovereto, Semorile, Church San Pantaleo and Sant'Ambrogio to the central church of Zoagli, San Martino, for a total of about twelve miles. An additional forested road allows the connection between the hamlet of Semorile and the sanctuary "Nostra Signora di Montallegro" - in the municipal area of ​​Rapallo - after crossing the pass Anchetta and Monte Castello.

In the past, many people from Zoagli were engaged as fishermen or by weaving. Over the centuries, but still today, this last work has enriched the village thanks to the trade and export of its precious fabrics to the world.

In the nineteenth century it became a valuable tourist destination and among the glorious people who lived here were the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, the poet Ezra Pound, the writer Sem Benelli and the painter Vasily Kandinsky.

History

Like many villages of Liguria Zoagli also saw its probable founding in prehistoric times, thanks to Ligurian tribes, in this case the Tigers. In the Roman period it appears as a village or castle on the street Aurelia.

In 1158 it became a fief - the papers mention it with the name Joagi - of the noble Fieschi family of Lavagna and in the following centuries, from the 13th century, it passed under the rule of the Republic of Genoa.

With the Napoleonic French rule, the established community of Zoagli entered the Department of the Gulf of Tigullio, with Rapallo as its capital, within the Ligurian Republic. From April 28, 1798 with the new French regulations, Zoagli became part of the 2nd canton. Annexed to the First French Empire from 13 June 1805 to 1814 it was included in the Department of the Apennines.

In 1815 it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia, according to the decisions of the Congress of Vienna of 1814, which subjugated the municipality of Zoagli to the province of Chiavari under the region of Genoa. From 1859 to 1926 the territory was included in the 5th district Rapallo, in the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946).
