Characteristic

History

Zvolen has been inhabited since the Paleolithic. In the 9th century, a Slavic settlement (today the Môťová district) became the regional center of today's central Slovakia. Zvolen remained the capital of the Zólyom County until 1760. One of the largest medieval castles in Europe, Pustý hrad, was built in the 11th and 12th centuries. The city, which was built under the castle, lay on an important trade route (Via Magna) from Buda to Krakow. Zwoleń received city rights from King Béla IV in 1230 - as one of the first cities in the Kingdom of Hungary. Privileges were confirmed on December 28, 1243, after the original document was destroyed during the war. Later, King Louis I the Great built a new castle that became a popular hunting resort for Hungarian kings. The future queen regnant Maria of Hungary and Emperor Sigismund celebrated their wedding there in 1385.

In the years 1848–1849 Ľudovít Štúr was a member of the Seym, and Zwoleń was its constituency. In the years 1871–1872, two new railway lines were built, and Zwoleń became an important railway junction and an important industrial center. Zvolen played an important role during the national uprising in Slovakia. Two of his armored trains, which were produced in the local railway factory, Hurban and Štefánik, can be seen near the Zvolen castle.

Zvolen is an important railway junction, an important road junction and has a large timber factory Bučina, Continental and a technical university. The market was modernized in 2002 and local businesses are popular with tourists. In winter, an ice rink is being built in the center, and the festivities last throughout December.

Zwoleń Castle
Pustý hrad
  • 1 Zvolen Castle National cultural monument. Standing on a low hill, the castle has a rectangular shape with four wings surrounding a central courtyard. Built between 1370-1382 as a gothic hunting chateau of the Italian city palace type, the chateau was built for the Hungarian king Ludwig I (the Great) of the Anjou family. To prevent Turkish attacks, fortifications were built later. They were inspired by the quattrocento architecture. The castle has been rebuilt many times, but the ground floor has retained its original character. In the 1960s, the castle was renovated according to the design of the architect K. Chudomelka. Preserved fragments of medieval panels and parts of beautiful architecture create an impressive environment for the collection of the Slovak National Gallery displayed in the castle.
  • 2 Pustý hrad A castle whose ruins are located on a wooded hill in the southern part of Zvolen in central Slovakia. It has an area of 76,000 m² and is probably one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. The original name is Zvolen Castle or Old Zvolen; Pustý hrad (meaning "abandoned castle") is a much later name used to distinguish the ruins from today's Zvolen Castle. Pustý hrad consists of two parts: the upper castle and the lower castle.
