Only one real road (in reality circular ...) exists on Rarotonga Island that can be recognized by the name of Macaw tapu, a path partly doubles this axis under the name of Ara Metua by serving more precisely all the localities. The upholstery is however in good condition and regularly maintained.
Driving is on the left of the road throughout the territory and the steering wheel is on the right in vehicles.
Speed limits:
- Route: 60 km / h
- City : 40 km / h
No traffic light exists on the archipelago and few pedestrian crossings, sidewalks are rare. Keep an eye out, however, stray animals can cross traffic lanes and cause serious damage to vehicles.
If you wish to drive, it is necessary to obtain a provisional driving license against payment of the sum of NZ $ 10 on presentation of your usual driving license and a photo ID. A test (quite simple though ...) can be submitted.
These steps must be taken upon your arrival at the police station in Avarua.
By bus
A regular two-way circular service exists in the territory.
Rates in effect in 2010:
- One way ticket : NZ $ 2.50
- Round trip ticket: NZ $ 4.00

The company Air Rarotonga operates regular services between the atolls of the Cook Islands.
