Go

By bus

Buses, mostly of the small breed found on the remote Indonesian island, run to most parts of the country and major cities such as the capital Dili, Baucau, Maliana, Los Palos and Suai are fairly well linked. . Indonesian-style vans and minibuses - a legacy from its 24-year rule - run from cities to neighboring villages.

Most cars leave very early in the morning and drivers tend to do keliling (Indonesia for "go around"), where they spend a lot of time circling the streets catching passengers before they actually leave.

Fares are around US$2 or US$3 for a journey of more than 100 km. For example, Dili-Baucau (123 km) costs 2 USD while Dili-Mota'ain (115 km) costs US$ 3.

By car

Taxis are one of the best means of transportation in and around the capital city of Dili. Ticket prices are not very steep ($1-3) and there are a lot of them!

You can rent a car (4WD) at Dili for about $85 a day. However, be prepared for adventure - besides the difficult roads there is also the lack of signposts. It is possible that you are so focused on driving that you miss the wonderful views around you. The most reputable car renters offer 24/7 roadside assistance anywhere in the country. But be aware that if you are in a remote location, your help, sent from Dili, will take some time to arrive.

While at Dili you will need to limit yourself to a speed limit of 40 km/h. On open roads you will likely accelerate and hit 50–60 km/h. Tourists from the West may find slow going but that is the maximum speed achievable on the Dili road.

Make sure you are carrying a valid or authorized driving license with you. This license can be from your country or you can have it issued in East Timor. Your license should identify the type of vehicle you are allowed to drive. Remember to drive carefully and remember that there is no provision here for third-party motorcycle insurance.

Language

There are about 16 indigenous languages, of which Tetum (the official language), Galole, Mambae and Kemak are the most widely spoken. In addition, Portuguese (official language), Indonesian, and English are also used.
