Founded as a military garrison by the Spaniards at the time of the Rif War, Al Hoceima received the name of Villa Sanjuro in honor of the general who directed the war operations.
The tourist interest of Al Hoceima, inhabited mainly by Berber people, is to be found in the nearby beaches among which that of Asfiha stands out, in front of the "Peñón de Alhucemas", an islet in the hands of the Spain.
Also in the immediate surroundings is the Al-Hoceima National Park which covers a rocky and barren stretch of Mediterranean coast but not for this lacking in landscape, as well as botanical and faunal interest. On this section of the coast is the "Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera", another islet in Spanish hands which, following the 1930 earthquake, joined the mainland via a sandy isthmus.
The area is highly seismic: the last earthquake dates back to 2004 and reached 6 ° on the Mercalli scale, producing extensive damage.
How to orient yourself
The center of Al Hoceima is there 1 piazza del Rif where the buses of the CTM company terminate and in the vicinity of which is the main market (souq) and numerous cheap hotels. The main avenue is the boulevard Mohammed V which cuts across the center in a north-south direction.
