The island is to the south of the Flensburg Fjord, enclosed in the east and north by the Little Belt and the Als Sund and the Als Fjord in the west.
Kegnæs is a smaller island south of Als at the exit of the Flensburg Fjord to the Baltic Sea. The two islands are connected by a road via a causeway.

It is not possible to go anywhere on the coast swim it is often too rocky to walk. However, there are sandy, shallow bays that are ideal for swimming. On the beaches there is often stranded seaweed that has to be overcome on the way into the water. At many beaches there are jetties into the water, over which you can get straight into the deeper water over the seaweed.
