Geographical notes

Arborea is located in the historical region of Campidano of Oristano and borders on Marrubiu, Santa Giusta is Terralba.

Background

It was founded during the Fascist period by dividing from Terralba and was inaugurated on 29 October 1928 as Villaggio Mussolini, later renamed Mussolinia di Sardegna with R.D. 1869 of 29 December 1930. The name was changed to Arborea on 8 March 1944, with the publication in the Official Gazette of the variation provision contained in the R.D. 68 of February 17, 1944.

During the Fascist regime, the reclamation of the Terralba plain was completed, which had already begun in the Giolitti period. The city was conceived as an urban center for this reclamation, but it was not until the second postwar period for this project to be fully realized, when malaria, a centuries-old plague of the area, was eradicated thanks to the work of the Rockefeller Foundation which financed a vast remediation through the DDT agent.
