Background
The history of Marrubiu is inextricably linked to one of the most important treasures of its territory, the obsidian of Monte Arci. This volcanic rock, of which some important outcrops can still be observed, was exploited since the Neolithic age for the manufacture of weapons and tools and traded by Sardinian prehistoric people in a large part of the Mediterranean basin. Specifically, the obsidian of Monte Arci reached the coasts of the French midi, Corsica and some settlements in northern Italy, from Tuscany to Liguria and up to Emilia-Romagna. Traces of the prehistory of the area are preserved in some important obsidian deposits whose exploitation has been ascertained since ancient times, located in the localities of Tzipaneas, Murus, Monte Sparau. The subsequent anthropogenic traces in the territory of Marrubiu date back to the Nuragic Age, which unfolded between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age when simple and complex nuraghi were built throughout the territory, both in the mountains and in the plains. Some of these constructions are currently scarcely visible, such as the Su Nuraxi nuraghe, near the present Camposanto, or the Nuraghe Ruinas, near the municipal border that divides Marrubiu from Terralba. Other uncertain sources suggest that another nuraghe was located where the parish church stands today. In large part these testimonies have disappeared due to particularly invasive agricultural works or due to the reuse of building blocks as building material even in modern times.
The first documentable historical evidence dates back to the advanced Punic age; around the town you can still see scant evidence of some rural farms built in the Roman Republican age to improve the agricultural exploitation of these fertile lands. Among these we remember Ruinas, Fossaus, Acciou Piscus, Benazzedda, the nuraghe Spignau and Muru Is Bangius, where the famous Praetorium was built a few centuries later. In the Roman imperial age, as in the rest of the Sardinian provincial territory, there was a phenomenon of urbanization in the villa: small farms were abandoned in favor of larger settlements, evidently more functional. The most important settlement of this period is certainly the Praetorium of Muru Is Bangius, inhabited until the late empire, with evidence that reaches the full Byzantine age.
The historical events that lead to the birth of the modern center of Marrubiu develop from the 11th century, with the birth of the village of Zuradili in the diocese of Tharros, Giudicato of Arborea, part of the curatoria of Bonorzuli. During the Giudicato period there are few evidences, partly deducible from the toponymy: we remember Su Moru 'and is Pisanus (the path of the Pisans), or Su Genovesu, which give us some information on the visitors of the area. Further confirmation of the commercial activities probably managed or in any case undertaken by the maritime republics during this part of the Middle Ages are some Genoese silver (coined by the mint of Genoa between 1139 and 1339) found in the Zuradili area. At the fall of the Giudicato (1420) it became part of the Marquisate of Oristano, and upon the defeat of the latter (1478) it passed under the Aragonese dominion and became a fief.
Further news comes from the seventeenth century when, evidently after a period of severe crisis, the village of Zuradili was repopulated in 1644. This attempt was in vain since the inhabitants of the village soon asked for the transfer to the valley, which took shape in 1659 with the birth of the modern center of Marrubiu.
In 1712 it formed the marquisate of San Carlo, which was first granted to the Bono family and then to the Paliaccio family, to whom it was redeemed in 1839 with the suppression of the feudal system.

Archaeological sites
- Nuragic complex of Sa Domu 'e S'Orku (To the north-east of the town, on the slopes of Monte Arci, near the border with the municipal territory of Morgongiori). It is a complex nuraghe largely underground and surrounded by a large village of circular huts, traces of which can be seen on the ground. Behind this complex, at the end of the plateau called Pranu Pira, there is the Spignau Nuraghe dating back to the Ancient Bronze Age, with a corridor structure, typical of protonuraghi. In the locality of Ceddus, immersed in the woods, you can admire the remains of another complex nuraghe, also largely underground and surrounded by an imposing partly collapsed rampart.
- Praetorium of Muru Is Bangius. It is a residential structure built in the imperial age, in the 2nd century AD, as a resting place for the governor of the province who needed to move from his official residence in Karalis to the distant colonies and municipia of northern Sardinia. The structure was equipped with a thermal plant equipped with beautiful mosaics and marble coverings, while the villa itself was decorated with plasters painted with very varied and colorful motifs of great suggestion. In the countryside around the town there are the remains of some archaeological settlements of the Punic and Roman period, which can be interpreted as rural farms.
Events and parties
- On Marrulleri.
In February or March. Carnival event that every year hosts numerous allegorical floats and masked groups not only from the town, but also from many other centers of the island, which on the first Sunday of Lent gather in Marrubiu to parade together creating a very suggestive atmosphere. The show is made up of colorful masks on foot, while the allegorical floats propose topical themes, enlivened and emphasized by the great artistic sensitivity of their authors. "Su Marrulleri" was born in 1979 as a local event in which the whole country participates. The current organization foresees the opening of the party with the parade in which children are the protagonists, followed by another two days dedicated to parades of groups and allegorical floats; since 1995 the second day hosts the great interprovincial meeting. The symbol of the festival, disputed among the inhabitants of Marriubia as a prize for the best wagon set up, is a wooden head sculpted by a local craftsman, Franco Spiga, which represents "Su Marrulleri", which literally means the happy and playful Marrubiese.
