Background
The Damnatio ad metalla document, by Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD) in his Naturalis historia, seems to confirm the presence of Ardesio and other villages in the upper Seriana Valley since Roman times. from the Celts, their traces are certain in Gandellino, but the first document that mentions this locality is an act dated May 15, 409, in which we read that Ardesio submitted to the hordes of Alaric I, king of the Visigoths. Then the locality suffered the Nordic invasions, until the territory was conquered by Charlemagne king of the Franks who donated the village and the surrounding areas to the Abbey of the monks of Tours, which in turn exchanged it, a few years later, exchanging other land of the Turin is bunting, in favor of the bishop Ambrose of Bergamo in the year 1026 subsequently confirmed by the bishop of Brescia.
The church was taxing enormously in the following years on silver mines, leaving the population in misery. The bishop expanded his possessions in the area, as there were mines of silver, copper and iron in the area, so much so that he built a residence in the central square of the town. Few remains of this sumptuous building remain, also due to a fire. a few years later, when the area passed under the control of the municipalities. In 1179 the bishop Guala returned all the assets to the municipality, with the sole exception of the silver mines in Campello.
In 1426 the whole valley, including Ardesio, passed under the dominion Veneto which maintained the privileges in force and divided the territory into two "Quadre", that of Ardesio and that of Clusone. Francesco Donato, in a document dated 1551, tells of Ardesio soldiers lined up in defense of Heraklion against the Turkish invasions in favor of the Venetian troops.
In 1797 the Napoleonic occupation began; the gesture of an inhabitant of Ardesio, Luigi Bana, remains famous, who in the square of Clusone, where the Tree of Liberty had been raised, with other troublemakers, knocked it down. Arrested, he was tried in Bergamo, where he was sentenced to death. Brought back to Clusone he was then shot in the town square. The side door of the town hall still shows the bullet holes.
The government took over in 1814 Austrian.
