background

The former capital of a district (Nomos) is located on the Arachthos river around 13 km from Ambracian Gulf away on the site of the ancient city of Ambrakia. It became the capital of the independent despotate of Epirus after the conquest of Constantinople in 1204. In 1318 it fell to the Orsini princes and in 1449 it became Turkish.
