Understand
Geography
Southeast Asia brings together two geographic areas: mainland Southeast Asia or Indochina, a peninsula on the Asian continent located between the China and theIndia, and the insular South-East Asia or Insulinde, a vast archipelago extending betweenAsia and theOceania.
The region is located at the intersection of tectonic plates with therefore strong seismic and volcanic activity.
History
The name is not old. It dates back to the creation in 1943 of the South East Asia Command or SEAC to take charge of all Allied operations in the region, thus giving an organizational form to the unified command of American, Australian, British and Dutch troops under a British general. The objective of the Allies was then the reconquest of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and British Malaysia.
The region was formerly called transgangetic India (meaning "beyond the Ganges"). This reference to India is explained by the fact that Southeast Asia is culturally strongly marked by Indian concepts and models.
Ancient Indian texts mention a region they call Suvarnabhumi, "the land of gold", or Suvarnadvipa, "the island of gold". Many historians believe that these names refer to Indonesia or even only Sumatra. The Greek geographer Ptolemy (90-168 AD) speaks of a “Golden Chersonesus”. The Persian scholar al-Biruni (973-1048 AD) attests that the Indians called the region which seems to correspond to Southeast Asia Suwarndib, that is, Suvarnadvipa. The Chinese called the region Kin Lin, kin meaning "gold".
Most of the countries of Southeast Asia benefited in the early 1990s from a massive influx of foreign capital which then withdrew, destabilizing the currency and then the economy of the countries.

Majority of Muslims insist on local sighting of the crescent moon to mark the start of Ramadan, but others insist on calculating the new moon or declaring it saudi to determine the start of the month. Since the first crescent after the new moon is not visible everywhere at the same time, the start and end dates of the month depend on what is visible in each location. Therefore, the dates vary from country to country, but usually only one day. |
