Aurland is a municipality on the fjord of the same name in the Norwegian Fylke Sogn and Fjordane.
background
The municipality of Aurland and the place Aurlandsvangen, which is also usually referred to as Aurland for short, were only dated until the 1990s in winter Aurlandsfjord from or via the neighboring village of Flåm via Bergen Railway and Flåm Railway to reach. The only road link after Lærdal, the so-called Snøvegen at an altitude of up to 1300 m, was and is mostly closed from October to June due to the snow masses. Since 1991 there has been a direct connection to the neighboring town in the direction of Voss and thus further to Bergen Flam The subsequent Flenja tunnel and the Gudvanga tunnel directly following a road connection to the west, since 2001 with the Lærdal tunnel to Lærdal - currently the longest road tunnel in the world with a length of 24 km - also a winter-safe road connection to the east. Since then, tourism has become the most important source of income for the place, which used to be the destination of cruise ships.

In the street
It's 66 km on the E 16 Voss via Gudvangen and Flåm, which are two longer tunnels between Gudvangen and Flåm.
From Lærdal, 37 km to the east, one drives through what is currently the longest road tunnel in the world, the 24.51 km long Lærdal tunnel.
A scenic alternative to the Lærdalstunnel is the Aurlandsvegen, the Fylkesvegen 243 over the fell. This old route between Lærdal and Aurland was the only road connection until the tunnel was built, but it is closed for up to eight months a year due to enormous amounts of snow. Today the route has the status of a National turistvei.
