Congo River Basin is a region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
To know
In the region, the presence of armed gangs and tribal groups carrying out raids in inhabited centers with consequent massacres of civilians is reported. These incursions are not dictated by ethnic conflicts but by malnutrition due to the destruction caused by Second Congo War (1998-2003). In the province of Ituri, fighting resumed in 2008 and the peace negotiations of 2015 were not successful.
Political instability, the difficulty in finding basic foodstuffs, especially farmed meat, and the abundance of weapons have resulted in an increase in poaching and a dramatic decline in biodiversity. All animal species living in the equatorial forests of the Congo Basin are hunted not excluding primates (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas). Elephants and hippos are killed by the thousands for the ivory that feeds a smuggling international directed mainly in China is Thailand. In 2019, all of these animal species were on the verge of extinction.
It seems almost certain that the habit of eating wild meat is responsible for the transmission of the lethal virus Ebola from primates to humans.
