Geographical notes
It borders to the north with the Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, to the northwest with the Douro Litorale, to the west with the Beira Coast, to the south with the Beira Bassa and to the east with the Spain (Province of Salamanca in Castile and León).
This province, together with the Beira Bassa and the Beira Trasmontana, formed a major geographical unit: the Beira Interna.
Background
La Beira Alta was an ancient province (or natural region) of Portugal, formally established with an administrative reform of 1936. The provinces had no practical function and disappeared with the 1976 Constitution.
The region had 21 municipalities, with the entire districts of Guarda and Viseu and two municipalities of that of Coimbra. Its capital was Viseu.
