Territories and tourist destinations

  • Orange Walk District - Agricultural center about 100 km northwest of Belize City, Orange Walk Town it is of no interest other than as a base for excursions to the archaeological site of Lamanai (Literally: "The submerged crocodile"), on the shores of a lagoon among splendid tropical landscapes. Lamanai it can be reached with one of the boats prepared by the agencies of Orange Walk Town that go up the course of the New River. In the Orange Walk district there is a large community of Mennonites, dedicated to agriculture and who still persist today in wearing nineteenth-century costumes, also rejecting any technological innovation.
  • Corozal district - Located near the border with Mexico, Corozal Town it is a city of 100,000 inhabitants that has partly preserved its colonial air. Corozal Town constitutes the main entrance for those tourists who have decided to reach the country by land stopping at the airport of Cancún. On the bay of the Corozal district stand the Mayan ruins of Cerros and, still on the coast but further away, the fishing center of Sarteneja.

  • Cuello - Archaeological site built by the Maya civilization. There are the remains of an area used as a steam bath dating back to 900 BC.
  • Lamanai - Archaeological site built by the Mayan civilization, located in a picturesque location.
  • Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve (Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve) - Natural reserve also extended to the marine part, therefore it falls within the area protected byUNESCO.
  • Shipstern Nature Reserve (Shipstern Nature Reserve) - Just outside the town of Sarteneja in a north-easterly direction it includes portions of jungle interspersed with numerous marshes and mangrove forests along the coast that offer shelter to numerous species of mammals, reptiles and amphibians, as well as 200 species of butterflies.
  • Saint Rita Corozal - Archaeological site of Mayan ruins in the suburbs of Corozal Town.
