background
This place is one of the oldest known Mayan places. The earliest finds go back to the 24th century BC. The oldest buildings date back to 2000 BC. The last structural measures took place in 300 AD. But one assumes a settlement here until after 1000 AD. In addition, one of the oldest evidence of long-distance trade within Central America has been found here. The jade jewelry found here but about 400 km away date from the year 600 BC. Chr.
The complex was archaeologically registered for the first time in 1973 by Norman Hammond.
getting there
The ruin is about 3 km west of Orange Walk on the grounds of the Cuello Distellery (Yo Creek Road).
Tourist Attractions
The facility can be viewed with the approval of the Distellery at the entrance gate. Most of the structures come from the classical phase.
The complex consists of a few plazas with temples, residential buildings and a palace with underground chambers.
But behind structure 34, the real sensation lies in this facility. During excavations here one came across the foundations of a building, which is the oldest structure of the Maya culture that has been discovered to date. It was also possible to uncover graves from the pre-classical period.
