background

The ruins of Chan Chich mean "little bird" and generally include two plazas. The oldest traces of settlement are dated to approx. 100 AD and can be found on the upper plaza and it is assumed that this initially represented the city center. But in 300 AD the city center was moved to the lower plaza and this was continuously expanded until 600 AD. Then another change followed and the upper plaza was completely built over. In 900 AD all construction work was finally stopped and the place left.

In 1985, Barry Bowen learned of the existence of an extensive Mayan ruin near Chan Chich Creek from a forest worker named Tenico. He let himself be led there and began uncovering them in 1987. In 1988 he opened the Chan Chich Lodge on the lower plaza.

  • Upper plaza. In 1997, an underground chamber from the Proto Klassik (100 to 250 AD) was found 2.4 meters below the square. The remains of an approx. 40-year-old person who had received numerous grave goods were found in it. In addition to eleven clay pots, jade jewelry and a wooden snake were also found. These additions are interpreted as the signs of an early royal house. But the most important buildings were not erected until the Classical period between AD 600 and AD 900.
  • Lower plaza. The Chan Chich Lodge can be found here today. This area was expanded as a political and religious center with numerous buildings in the years 300 AD to 600 AD.
