background
Due to the good location between the two lakes Sacnab and Yaxha, a city could emerge here that dates back to 600 BC. Was continuously settled until 900 AD. The name of the city was actually Yaxha and roughly means "green-blue water". She belongs with Naranjo and Nakum to the so-called cultural triangle in the region. This 1,200 km² area is currently being explored and excavated as the largest research project in the Maya world with over 300 employees. Not only the three big cities already mentioned are the goal of the work, as 13 smaller cities were found here. The city was discovered in 1905 by Maurice Perigny and has been extensively researched archaeologically since then. An extensive restoration program was started in 1990.
