The city, which is called "Ah-Con-Kay" in the Mayan language, is attributed to two flowering phases on the basis of archaeological finds, one in the pre-classical period and one in the classical period. With the arrival of the Spaniards, the place was built over and, with 13,000 inhabitants, is in the shadow of the metropolis 30 km away Merida.
