background

It is believed that the city was founded here in the pre-classical Maya period (before 200 AD). The city, which is called "Ah-Con-Kay" in the Mayan language, is attributed to two flowering phases on the basis of archaeological finds, one in the pre-classical period and one in the classical period. It is also believed that the city is closely related to Teotihuacan was standing. With the arrival of the Spaniards, the place was built over and, with 13,000 inhabitants, is in the shadow of the metropolis 30 km away Merida.
