This Maya site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. In 600 AD a volcano erupted nearby and the ashes buried this Mayan village under itself and sealed it off for posterity. This process was slow enough for all residents to get to safety, but so fast that all belongings were left behind in the village. In 1976 the city was rediscovered.
