background

The first traces of settlement go to the year 1000 BC. BC back. From this period trade contacts to other sites of this phase such as Nakbé be detected. Around AD 200, like most of the region's major cities, the city was abandoned for unknown reasons. But unlike most cities, the place was repopulated a short time later. In the course of the influence of Teotihuacan in Tikal A short time later, Uaxactún became a close ally of Tikal. There is evidence that this process was not entirely voluntary. But the situation was not to change until it was abandoned in the 9th century AD for unknown reasons. The city has been explored since 1920 and made headlines back then, as it was here for the first time that evidence could be provided that the pre-classical Maya was more than a primitive Indian existence. These results were borne out by the finds in Nakbé, El Mirador or Cerros approved.
