Rio Bec is a Mayan ruin in Campeche (State) in Mexico.

background

This ruin is a whole series of small groups in the rainforest, to which no real center could be assigned so far. In addition to their spatial proximity, the groups are primarily united by a common architectural style, which is also known as the Rio-Bec style. Little is known of the city's history as research here is still in its infancy. So far only two of the numerous steles have been deciphered. One dates from AD 476 and one from AD 795, which indicates a long period in the classical period. The first reports about this site were made at the end of the 19th century. In 1907, Count Maurice Perigny discovered the site and subjected it to an initial archaeological investigation. Years followed in which various expeditions discovered individual groups and renamed them. Groups were also rediscovered, but registered as new, which led to a somewhat confusing name that has been retained to this day. The best preserved group B, which was described as early as 1907, was not located beyond doubt until 1972. Excavations have been underway here under French supervision since 2003.
