background
Tazumal is one of several archaeological sites in the urban area of Chalchuapa and is arguably the best restored and largest Mayan site in El Salvador. The rise of the city began in AD 100 and a first boom in the Classical period, when most of the great pyramids were built. But while most of the Maya cities in the area perished, Tazumal continued to flourish in the post-classical period. Like all cities in the region in the post-classic period, there was a strong reference to this Tula. The type of contact or the successor is unclear. In AD 1200, the city was abandoned for unknown reasons.
