Progreso is a city in Yucatan in Mexico.

background

This city with a good 37,000 inhabitants was originally founded as a port facility for Merida. Progreso is now a popular destination for the residents of Merida and tourists. The first settlements, however, go back to the first century BC. At that time, however, the city was still called Xcambo. She was under the strong influence of Izamal and had its heyday in the early classical period up to the sixth century. The town's success was largely based on salt mining.

Tourist Attractions

  • Xcambo. The pre-Columbian remains can be found on the coastal road towards Uaymitun 2 km from the city center. Due to the relatively long settlement period, some architectural styles can be found here. The ruins are still a pilgrimage destination today, as legend has it that there was an apparition of Mary here. Numerous buildings are lined up around two plazas, around 10 of which are of considerable size. Particularly noteworthy here are the pyramid of the cross and the pyramid of masks.
  • Uaymitun. There is a small flamingo colony here. Who does not follow it Celestun manages, with a bit of luck you can still see a few flamingos here.

activities

shop

All you have to do is stroll through the city center or along the beach. You come across many small shops, most of which sell souvenirs and other things for tourists. However, you should also be careful when buying films, CDs, etc., because you only get pirated copies here. So you support the poorer people, but you can't or only badly import these pirated copies into Germany.
