background

Despite the abundance of inscriptions found here, not much is known about the city. Since all the inscriptions date from the 8th century AD, it is currently assumed that the high phase is also to be set in this period. The burial island is found in a text Jaina Mention. In 1887 Teobert Maler visited the ruined city and wrote the first reports about it. But it was not until 1992 that the first archaeological excavations took place. In the meantime the city had become the target of numerous grave robbers. Most of the items found during the excavations are currently in Campeche in the museum.
