background

The oldest finds date from the 3rd century AD and were made under structure 2. The importance of the place was probably limited and was probably given up again in the 6th century AD. But the rise of the cities Chichen Itza and Mayapán also led to a revitalization of the trade routes, so that a small town was formed again here. When the big cities inland lost their importance again, this led to a revival of settlement activities on the coast, as the importance of sea trade routes increased. With a major trading port, El Meco was able to benefit from this trend and continue to grow. It was not until the Spaniards arrived in the 16th century that the city was abandoned out of fear.
