The Maya site is embedded in the Rio Azul National Park. Where there are numerous other Mayan ruins. In total, an estimated 400,000 people lived here during the Classical Period (200 to 800 AD). Rio Azul was one of the largest sites and from the 4th century. settled AD. Probably the city was with Tikal allied. The city had one of the largest irrigation systems in the entire Maya world and was certainly able to gain the boom and prosperity from this circumstance. Finds also show contacts to other cities such as El Pilar (Belize) in Belize. In 530 AD, however, the city was completely destroyed and then abandoned. The assumption that the city not far away Calakmul was responsible for it cannot be dismissed out of hand, since this was the arch enemy of Tikal. A short time later, however, the city was repopulated, but could no longer achieve its old size and was finally in the 9th century. AD completely abandoned.
