background

Investigations could prove a settlement of this city as early as the seventh century BC. In the second century there seems to have been a first high phase, probably caused by trade with the metropolises in El Mirador and Nakbé. When this went down, the first shine of Piedras Negras was lost. But it is considered certain that the city had risen again to the dominant regional power since the fourth century and controlled the trade on the Usumacinta River. In AD 514, Piedras Negras was able to bring three surrounding cities to their knees and become politically dependent. The alliance with these cities (including Yaxchilán) gave further impetus, so that the greatest expansion was reached in the period between AD 600 and AD 800. But at the end of the 8th century the tide turned when King K'inich Tatbu Skull IV was captured by Piedras Negras of Yaxchilán. The city was probably abandoned a few years later. The faces of Maya kings were deliberately knocked out of steles and characters were destroyed. Often this is interpreted as a sign of a revolt. At the end of the 19th century, Teobert Maler was the first to document the facility. Since 1931 they have been digging and researching here. It is remarkable that Tatiana Proskouriakoff was able to carry out one of the first successful translations on the basis of the characters found here. She was buried here at the facility after her death at the F group.

getting there

Port in Frontera Corozal

The usual journey is initially via the Fronteriza Highway from Palenque in Mexico to the border town of Frontera Corozal. There is a small harbor here where you can get on one of the many boats that will take you to the ruins. Only experienced captains usually do this, as the route is not easy to drive. For the trip you have to get everything you need in advance. You should be prepared for anything. To do this, you cross the border to Guatemala, so valid papers should be planned as well as provisions for an unexpected overnight stay due to technical difficulties or a change in the weather.

Tourist Attractions

The complex is particularly well-known for the fine sculptural work. There is a huge stone block with the city's emblem right on the bank. The city consists of numerous squares lined with pyramids and palaces. There are also two ball courts. What is unique here in the inscriptions and reliefs is that the respective artists were also allowed to immortalize themselves with a glyph. But with all this, the real attraction remains the location and the adventure of reaching the facility.
