El Pilar is a Mayan ruin in Cayo District in Belize.

This ruin ("water hole") with its 25 squares with numerous structures is one of the largest Mayan cities in Belize. The complex extends across the border into the area of ​​El Pilar Archaeological Reserve for Maya Flora & Fauna Guatemala into it. Only small parts of the city in Belize are currently exposed.

history

The first traces of settlement go back to 800 BC. BC back. In the years 300 to 800 AD, the city quickly grew into one of the centers in what is now the border area between Belize and Belize Guatemala. The population at peak times is estimated at 20,000 to 50,000. Towards the end of the 9th century AD, the city was abandoned. Initial findings suggest that El Pilar has an alliance with Tikal, which is only 50 km to the west, was only discovered in 1972 and archaeologically examined for the first time in 1981. In the 1990s, Anabel Ford of the University of California founded the El Pilar Foundation and, in addition to the plant itself, examined above all the aspect of Mayan agriculture in connection with ecology. In this context, several gardens in the ancient Mayan style were laid out here. [1]

There is no bus connection to El Pilar. Therefore you should either travel by yourself with your own car and from San Ignacio in the direction Bullet Tree Falls Drive past this and after about 10 km you will reach the cities.
