background

Translated from the Kekchi Maya, Nim Li Punit means something like "big hat". The character found on steles for this city reads Ka-Wa-Ma.

history

The steles found in Nim Li Punit record a period of use between 700 and 900 AD. During this time the 20 buildings and the 26 related steles were built. Type of construction and found texts suggest a close connection with Lubaantun, Pusilhá or Copan shut down. It is estimated that around 6,000 people lived here in the heyday.

The city was rediscovered by an oil company in 1976. In 1986, excavations were carried out by Richard Leventhal, during which the royal burial chamber with many accessories was found. 1998 to 1999 the area was examined more closely with the support of the EU, with a new stele (No. 16 ) was brought to light.
