Map of Chicanná

background

The first traces of settlement can be traced back to the 3rd century. v. Lead back. The heyday of this city was probably in the classical period, as most of the buildings were built between AD 600 and AD 830. The city was probably abandoned around AD 1000. It was not until 1934 that the city was rediscovered by Karl Ruppert and John Denison. It has been excavated and restored here since 1969. Since the original name of the city was not known, the place was called the House of the Serpent Mouth, analogous to the reliefs on the numerous buildings. Many fine examples of the Rio-Bec architectural style and the Chenes architectural style can be found here in particular.

Tourist Attractions

The system consists of individual groups of buildings, some of which are connected to pedestals by paths and are distributed across the site without a real center. The most important buildings are:

  • Structure 1. The largest building here corresponds to the classic Rio Bec style with two inaccessible towers. There are 10 rooms here, six of which are accessible. There is a beautiful frieze in the front area.
  • Structure 2. The name-giving and most famous building. Here, a snake's mouth is shown around the central entrance in a well-preserved manner.
  • Structure 3. A small platform with pillars and a small pyramid.
  • Structure 6. This building is adorned with a roof chamber and contains accessible chambers.
  • Structure 10/11. Probably the oldest group of buildings here. Both buildings contain chambers and form a courtyard.
  • Structure 20. Two story building with lots of rooms. The Chac masks on the corners of the building are particularly interesting.
