Trading on the San Pedro River allowed a small settlement to develop into a royal family even in the pre-classical period. Waka '(the correct name) had intensive contacts early on with the 60 km away Tikal. In 382 AD a new king arrived in this city with his army and had this event recorded in stone. This king was none other than Siyaj K’ahk ’, who is believed to have come from Teotihuacan in Mexico came. Archaeologists generally just call this date "The Entry". Because from here Siyaj K’ahk ’set out to visit many important cities such as Tikal or Copan under the direct control of Teotihuacán. From then on, Waka '(El Peru) was a loyal ally with Tikal, until in the 7th century AD the then King K’inich B’alam had a politically motivated marriage with the Princess K’ab’el of Calakmul received and thus changed sides. In the year 732 AD it was Calakmul beaten for the second time within a short time and the reigning King Yoknoom Took Ka'will, who was also the brother of Princess K’ab’el, was captured and executed. This fate also befell the heir to the throne of K’inich B’alam ten years later. After that, there is only one inscription in AD 771 that refers to a noble woman named Pak'al. In the following years there was a rapid decline and the city was abandoned.

Four plazas can be seen here, which are surrounded by over 500 structures. Some of the representations on steles and altars can still be seen very clearly.
In addition to the archaeological site, there is a small colony of red macaws that can be found here from February to June.
