background

Stela Plaza in the A group in Uxbenká

For a long time the ruin site was not given greater importance and was kept Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit for the regionally important centers. The site was not documented for the first time until 1970 and another 20 years later Richard Leventhal carried out the first excavations here, where mainly the steles in the A group were analyzed. A grave was discovered in the central plaza of the A group. But the latest excavations, which only began in 2005, have relativized the expansion of the city and its importance. Uxbenká is undoubtedly a regional center. Excavations have shown that the city's origins go back to 250 AD and finds even date back to 500 BC. Refer. So Uxbenká is at least the oldest city in the south of Belize. Many of the stone carvings found here are among the oldest ever found in Belize. Right on the best route through the Maya Mountains from El Peten Located in the direction of southern Belize, the place could certainly expand quickly as a trading city. In addition, the soils in southern Belize are still among the most fertile in the Maya world. Even today, the land is cultivated here without any major artificial intervention (irrigation, fertilization or fallow periods). In this way, Uxbenká was able to acquire economic independence from its strategically good location.

Tourist Attractions

View from B group in Uxbenká

The complex is essentially spread over three hills, from which one has a fantastic view of the surrounding area. Since 2005, the complex has been exposed here from the archaeological point of view and with the aim of making this complex completely accessible to tourism. It is already foreseeable that one of Belize's top tourist attractions will certainly be created here. But the visit is already worthwhile.

  • A group. This group is located on a 15 meter high acropolis on a hill directly at the parking lot. In addition to six smaller and larger pyramids, there is the 30 meter x 50 meter large Stela Plaza, on which more than 20 steles can be found. Some fragments of writing can still be seen on these. On one of them there are clear characters that indicate a connection with Tikal Clues. There is also an open grave in the middle of the square, which was discovered in 1990. The A group is directly linked to the K group.
  • B group. This part of the facility is a little more difficult to access. A path does exist, but it is not always cleared. Therefore, the support of a guide should be used here, who will lead the tourist safely to this group, which is located on an acropolis, a little higher than Plaza A. There are some structures and a ball playground here. Although these have not yet been completely uncovered, some structural details can clearly be seen here. But what is really impressive here is the panoramic view of the rainforest. Altogether there are 5 plazas in the B group to the F group.
  • C group
  • D group
  • E group
  • F group
  • G group. This group is the highest and like A and B groups on an acropolis on a hill. Here are some structures around a plaza. This group is currently very difficult to access.
  • K group. This group connects directly to the A group via two flights of stairs and has a plaza that is flanked by three smaller structures and one long structure.
