Strategically located on the Holmul River, the city was able to benefit from this trade route and had its peak in the period between the 8th century. AD and the 10th century AD She belongs with Naranjo and Yaxha to the so-called cultural triangle in the region. This 1,200 km² area is currently being explored and excavated as the largest research project in the Maya world with over 300 employees. Not only the three big cities already mentioned are the goal of the work, as 13 smaller cities were found here. The city was discovered in 1905 by Maurice Perigny and has been extensively researched archaeologically since then. An extensive restoration program was started in 1990.

From the main road between Flores (Guatemala) and San Ignacio (Belize) one branches in the direction Yaxha from. From here an unpaved path leads to the ruins in Nakum. The path can only be mastered with a 4x4 car in dry conditions.
