background
Xel Há is a Mayan ruined city with a large pre-Columbian port area, which is now a nature park. From the 1st century AD, Xel Há developed into one of the most important port cities of the Maya thanks to the lagoon of the same name. Xel Ha was probably with Xcaret, Tancah and Muyil the main port of Coba. It is believed that there was a direct sacred road (sacbé) to Coba. In the 7th century AD, the city reached its greatest expansion for the time being and centuries of growth were now followed by centuries of stagnation. But long after the downfall of the former sponsor Coba, there was a second boom in the 12th century AD. Since the land trade routes lost importance in the course of the decline of most of the large inland cities, the river and sea trade routes continued to gain in importance. The place could benefit from this. But the wealth also created covetousness, so that a protective wall was also built in Xel Há. When the Spaniards invaded the region, they severed the existing trade routes. Deprived of their livelihood, Xel Ha was abandoned.
