background

The background of the city goes back to the pre-classical period around 300 BC. BC back. At first the city was under strong influence from Tikalbut what turned out to be in 546 AD Calakmul was able to place a supposedly loyal king here. However, this did not keep it exactly with his loyalty to the Alliance, so that Calakmul his allies Caracol sent to correct this. After a warning shot in AD 626, Naranjo was directly attacked and defeated in AD 631. In the year 642 AD Tikal tried to gain influence again by marrying a princess with the royal house of Naranjo. This was followed by further arguments with Caracol, which ended twice with negative results for Naranjo. Now the alliance took hold Calakmul the initiative and continued in 682 AD with Queen Wak Chanil Ajaw the daughter of King B'alaj Chan K'awiil of Dos pilas on the throne of Naranjo. In the next few years Naranjo waged unconditional war with all cities in the area and was able to establish itself as a regional center of power. When the great ally Calakmul was surprisingly defeated by Tikal in AD 695, the zenith of Naranjo was also reached. Naranjo was probably crushed and given up during the eighth century. The death of Queen Wak Chanil Ajaw (Mrs. Six Heavens) was dated to the year 741 AD and recorded on a stele. Not in Naranjo, however, but in Dos Pilas, where Naranjo belongs Nakum and Yaxha to the so-called cultural triangle in the region. This 1,200 km² area is currently being explored and excavated as the largest research project in the Maya world with over 300 employees. Not only the three big cities already mentioned are the goal of the work, as 13 smaller cities were found here.
