La Milpa is a Mayan ruin in Orange Walk District in Belize.
background
This Maya city developed into a powerful metropolis with around 50,000 inhabitants during its heyday around AD 750 and was abandoned around AD 900. However, only a few centuries later, Maya settled in La Milpa again, so that the Spaniards in the 16th century and the British lumberjacks in the 19th century met here in an inhabited city.
