history
The oldest traces of Mayan settlements that have been found here go back to 800 BC. back. When the Spaniards reached this area, they met an intact society here. Even the loggers in the 18th century still had to deal with attacks by Mayans here. In the late 19th century, most of the area was owned by the Belize Estate & Produce Company for logging. In 1982 the owner of the Belikin Brewery, Barry Bowen, bought the land. He then became aware of the Massachusetts Audubon Society through Coca Cola, which was looking for land to release birds and bequeathed a piece of land to them. Finally, in 1992, Bowen's administration program for Belize [www.pfbelize.com] was launched. In this step, Bowen bequeathed another large piece of land to the program. The same part was ultimately financed again by the World Land Trust from Great Britain.
