background

The earliest traces of settlement go back to the middle pre-classical period (between 600 BC and 300 BC). Most of the structures still to be found point to the late pre-classical and early classical periods. However, it is certain that the city gained in importance during the post-classical period and was in full bloom when the Spaniards arrived here in the heartland of the Acalán Maya. There are indications that the ruins are the legendary Itzamkanac, the capital of the Acalán Maya. Hernán Cortés came along here in 1525 AD. This was on the way to Honduras and had Cuauhtémoc, the last king of the Aztecs, as a prisoner. When he reached the capital of the Acalán Maya, he stopped here and described the city as a thriving trading city with many thousands of inhabitants. But Cortés feared that Cuauhtémoc would turn the inhabitants against him, so Cortés had him executed here without further ado.

getting there

By plane

The best connections to the air traffic run over Campeche and Villahermosa. From here the road continues.

In the street

On Carretera 221 branches off about halfway between the localities Reforma and Nuevo Coahuila a road to the north in the direction of the village Estado de Mexico. There the road continues to today's settlement El Tigre. The archaeological zone is one kilometer south (in front of) the settlement, about 15 km as the crow flies from Candelaria, but actually about 50 km away by road.

By boat

The archaeological site is about a kilometer from the Rio Candelaria. Traveling by boat from the city Candelaria is possible.
