Map of Villahermosa

background

Villahermosa is the capital of the state of Tabasco and has about 650,000 inhabitants. The city was founded in 1593 by the Spaniards on the Rio Grijalva. For a long time it was of little importance. The city is indeed the capital of the state Tabasco, but since it was actually Mexico's poor house for a long time, that didn't matter. When large oil reserves were discovered in the region in Tabasco in the 20th century, that changed quickly. The state is now one of the richest states in Mexico. The consistent expansion of agriculture has created a second major source of income. The focus here is on cattle breeding and cocoa or coconut cultivation. In recent years has also been due to the proximity of the archaeological sites La Venta, Comalcalco and Palenque tourism increased.
