San Cristobal de las Casas is a city in the highlands of Chiapas in Mexico. Because of its colonial center, the city is one of the Pueblos Mágicos.

background

Santo Domingo Monastery Church, San Cristóbal de las Casas

San Cristóbal de las Casas has over 185,000 inhabitants[1] and is considered the capital of the Indians. In 1994 the Zapatistas began their uprising here. They symbolically took the seat of government and left the city after 27 hours (source: Taking San Cristobal (1994) in Spanish). There are still a few Tzotzil villages in the vicinity of the city.

Around the Santo Domingo Church there is still an Indian market every day, but souvenirs are also sold to tourists.

By bus

OCC's 1st class bus terminal is located at the intersection of Calle Insurgentes and MEX 190, approx. 8 blocks south of the cathedral. It is also used by ADO and UNO. Right next to it is the Colectivo Terminal, from which journeys along the MEX 190 are served, e.g. to Tuxtla Gutiérrez and Ocosingo (50 pesos). Colectivos leave when they are full. During the day, the waiting time is usually no more than half an hour.
