Maní is a small town in Yucatan in Mexico.

The small town of 4,000 inhabitants seems rather sleepy, but on closer inspection, the town reveals its rich history. It is not exactly clear when the place was first settled, but this point in time is probably in the Classical era. The place of the tribe of the Xiu led a rather insignificant existence under the leadership of Uxmal. That changed suddenly in the 13th century when the Xiu moved their headquarters here. This city was strategically better located Mayapánwhere the Cocomes dynasty, ruling the region at the time, had its headquarters. From here the military conflict started, as a result of which Mayapán was completely devastated in 1441. Until the arrival of the Spaniards, this day was now celebrated as a public holiday. When the Spaniards arrived in Ti’ho ’in 1542 and the city Merida founded, one saw the chance to get rid of the hated Cocomes dynasty. The then prince Ah Kukum Xiú was baptized and allied himself with the Spaniards. They defeated the Cocomes together, but lost their independence at the same time. As early as 1549, most of the Mayan temples in Maní were demolished and a large Franciscan monastery was built from them. In 1562, in a ceremony by Diego de Landa here in Maní, all the books to be found and over 5000 Mayan icons from the entire Yuctán region were destroyed and burned.
