The earliest traces go back to the 5th century. AD back. The city quickly rose through extensive agriculture in the city. In the late pre-classical period around AD 200, however, the city was abandoned for unknown reasons. Around 650 AD the place was settled again and again it was agriculture that brought the city's wealth. But in the 9th century. AD the place was given up again. It is believed that this was something with the arrival of the Pipil from the central Mexico had to do. In the late 19th century, Santiago Ignacio Barbarena first mentioned the ruins. Archaeological research has been carried out here since 1976. The site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1992.

The site consists of numerous structures such as small temples, pyramids and two ball courts. The complex is known for the relief representations, but many of them fell victim to grave robbers or can now be found in museums.
