background

The first traces of settlement in this landscape dominated by rocks and small lakes lead to the 1st century BC. BC back. This city experienced its heyday in the late classical period from AD 600 to AD 900. During this time, the terrain was leveled on a large scale. Numerous inscriptions from this period have been found, but they have not yet been conclusively evaluated. In the post-classic period, the facility was finally abandoned.

Tourist Attractions

Between small lakes there are numerous platforms and approx. 200 buildings that are perfectly integrated into the surroundings and into the slopes. The complex is certainly one of the most beautiful Mayan sites. Particularly noteworthy here are:

  • Group A. Group with a large acropolis that can be climbed via a flight of stairs. There is a large cenote here.
  • Group B. Three smaller pyramids and lying above on the slope, a place with a beautiful view.
  • Group C. The ball playground is located here.
  • Group D. The large square stands out here, with its large ashlar stones, which is a rarity in the Maya world. From here you have a good view of the area.
