Map of Sayil

background

Sayil roughly means "place of the ants" and was one of the most important cities in the region during the Puuc era. The place also takes place in a Mayan story that was recorded in the so-called Chilam-Balam writings (records of local traditions). Around 800 AD, the city is believed to have reached its peak with up to 9,000 inhabitants. John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood rediscovered the ruins of the city in 1842, and Teobert Maler followed suit in 1886. Today, the extensive complex is a key element of the so-called Puuc Route, although actually only the great palace has been restored.
