La Corona is a Mayan ruin in El Peten in Guatemala.
background
This city experienced its heyday in the classical period. The city was one of a number of allied cities in the region such as Dos pilas or El Peruwho have an alliance with Calakmul had. In the year 675 AD tried the enemy Tikal to regain a foothold in the region through military means. La Corona was the first to be hit and heavily devastated. The city never recovered from this blow and was finally abandoned. In the 1960s, a writing plate appeared on art markets that indicated an alliance between Calakmul and an unknown city. This was christened "Site Q". In 1966, this site was discovered in the rainforest of Guatemala and named it La Corona, as the arrangement of the pyramids looked like a crown to archaeologists. In the following excavations a stele and a writing plate were found, which clearly proved to have found the "Site Q" with La Corona.
